DISCOVERIES MADE BY ARTA MEMBERS

 

1. Fortified Settlement "Piatra Corbului I"(Raven Cliffs I) - Poiana Brasov

• Discovery made in August 2003 by Vlad Totoianu and Lucian Comsa
• Description: three massive stone enclosures and a fortified terrace
• The Place: 900m alt. / Forest / Clearing / Belvedere Point
• Dated: Iron Age
• Access: from the road to Poiana Brasov, in 200m

 

2. Cairn Wall and Vestiges in Poiana Brasov, "Valea Sticlariei" (Glassware's Valley) - Poiana Brasov

• Discoveries made by Vlad Totoianu and Lucian Comsa in August 2004 - March 2005
• Description: 4 km long Dry-Stone Wall, 3m wide; dozens of iron reduction Furnaces; stone enclosures; the heptagonal Apse of an Old Romanic Church.
• The Place: 1000m alt. / Meadow / Forest
• Dated: Early Medieval
• Access: From the Road: Rasnov - Poiana Brasov in 500m

 

3. "Ciocleanu" Fortified Settlement - Sacele

• Discovery made by Vlad Totoianu in September 2004
• Description: prehistoric fortified settlement with a rampart “cutting off” a promontory
• The Place: 800m alt. / Meadow
• Dated: Bronze Age - Wiettenberg Culture
• Access: 500m to the N-W of "Poiana Angelescu" (Angelescu's Meadow)

 

4. Giant Fortification of Bunloc - Sacele

• Discovery made in March 2005 by Vlad Totoianu
• Description: fortified perimeter with a stone wall 1.80m wide, 4km long, closing an area of 100ha
• The Place: 850-1180m alt. / Meadow / Forest / Belvedere Poit
• Dated: Bronze Age, PostRoman
• Access: from DN1 Road in 600m to the chairlift

 

5. Fortified Settlement "Coasta Vatafului" (Chieftain's Height) – Brasov, Darste

• Discovery made by Vlad Totoianu in October 2005
• Description: Stone Fortified Terrace and Rampart
• The Place: 700m alt. / Forest
• Dated: Bronze Age - Schnekenberg Culture
• Access: from DN1 in 400m

 

6. Citadel of Timis Valley - Timisul de Sus

• Discovery made in August 2007 by Vlad Totoianu
• Description: citadel with a defensive ditch, wall and bulwark
• The Place: 800m alt. / Forest
• Dated: Medieval
• Access: from DN1 Road in 200m

 

7. Ring-Forts in New District - Brasov

• Description: four "ring" type fortifications
• The Place: 650m alt. / Forest / Clearing
• Dated: undetermined
• Access: from Noua District in 500m

 

8. Acropolis Settlement "Piatra Corbului II" (Raven Cliffs II - Poiana Brasov

• Discovery made in March 2008 by Vlad Totoianu
• Description: 7 terraces carved into the bedrock, clustered around a 700m alt. peak, 1km N of "Piatra Corbului I" Fortified Settlement
• The Place: 700m alt. / Forest
• Dated: Bronze Age
• Access: 1km away from the Poiana Brasov Road

 

9. Fortified Settlement "Dealu Mare" (The Big Hill) - Ariusd, Covasna County

• Discovery made by Vlad Totoianu and Gabriel Mihaila in September 2008
• Description: hilltop surrounded by a dry-stone wall
• Area: 730m alt. Forest / Belvedere Point
• Dated: undetermined
• Access: 3km NE from Ariusd eponymous settlement of the Cucuteni-Ariusd Culture, on tourist's mark

 

10. Fortified Settlement in Lisnau - Covasna

• Discovery made in March 2009 by Vlad Totoianu
• Description: fortification with a bank and ditch “cutting off” a promontory
• The Place: 720m alt. / Forest / Grassland / Belvedere Point
• Dated: undetermined
• Access: 1 km E of The Roman Road: Reci - Magherus - Lisnau Vale, on tourist's mark

 

11. Roman Road and Fortifications, in Bretcu area - Covasna

• Discovery made by Vlad Totoianu and Radu Zagreanu in August 2009
• Description: Roman road going from W of Castrum Angustia to "Poiana Sarata" village over the Ghepar peak; Roman surveillance towers
• The Place: 1300/600m alt. / Meadows / Belvedere Points
• Dated: Roman Era
• Access: from DN 11 Road in Bretcu village

 

12. Roman Road and Fortifications in "Intorsura Buzaului" region - Brasov / Covasna

• Discovery made in June 2010 by Vlad Totoianu, Catalin Morar, Radu Zagreanu and Ladislau Kapitany.
• Description: Roman Road going from "Tabla Butii" mountain pass to Magherus village, through "Intorsura Buzaului" region; Austrian Festung ("Cetatea Fetei") and Ramparts in "Tabla Butii" mountain pass
• The Place: 1300/700m alt. / Meadows / Belvedere Points
• Dated: Roman Age
• Access: from DN 10 Road in the village of “Vama Buzaului”

 

13. Fortification of King’s Mountain – Prahova County

• Discovery made by Vlad Totoianu, Ladislau Kapitany and Gabriel Mihaila in May 2011
• Elements: Bank-Ditch Fortification, surrounding “Vf. lui Crai” (Kings Peak); 8m height “vallum” ; enclosing an area of 16ha.
• The Place: 1450m alt. / Meadows / Belvedere
• Dated: Post-Roman Era
• Access: from Slon village, 8km north, on dirt- road.

 

14. Stone-Cross of King’s Mountain – Prahova County

• Discovery made in May 2011 by Ladislau Kapitany, Vlad Totoianu and Gabriel Mihaila.
• Elements: Stone Cross with an estimated height of 2m, fixed in a massive stone base; the central symbol is the Eagle between the Sun and Moon; Slavonic Writings carved on the surface; Similar symbolic composition with the Cross of Queen Mary of Romania from Balchik.
• The Place: 1400m alt. / Meadows / Belvedere
• Dated: Medieval
• Access: from Slon village, on dirt- road, 8km North.

 

15. Roman Road in Persani Mountains between Ormenis and Racosul de Jos

• Discovery made by Vlad Totoianu, Gabriel Mihaila and Iulian Jeney in December 2011.
• Elements: Roman Road which starts from Ormenis village to west and ends in Racosul de Sus village to be continued to Hoghiz. The road is passing by 500m south of Tipia Ormernisului.
• The Place: 700m alt. / Meadows / Belvedere
• Dated: Roman
• Access: from DN 131B Road; Maierus - Ormenis.
